Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Tanzanian counterpart President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete on Sunday October 4th launched 90 km Taveta-Mwatate road of multinational Arusha-Holili/Taveta-Voi road corridor in Taita Taveta County.
The project is jointly funded by the governments of Kenya and Tanzania together with African Development Bank (AfDB). AfDB has given $218 million toward the project with Kenya receiving $116 million for Taveta-Mwatate road and Tanzania $102 million for the Arusha-Holili section.
The road is very fundamental for the regional integration and establishing the missing road network links in the regional infrastructure corridor.
The road will promote trade and economic growth in both countries as previously a journey from Tanzania to Mombasa that took at least 14 hours will only take two and a half hours.
