African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) is expected to deploy a Formed Police Unit to Hiiraan region in south-central Somalia to be stationed in Beledweyne. AMISOM had sent a recce team to evaluate the readiness of the outpost before the deployment of the police unit.
Superintendent of Police, Samuel E.M. William, AMISOM Team Site Leader in Beledweyne, said the deployment of the Formed Police Unit (FPU) would greatly boost activities of individual police officers, providing them with security to enable them access new areas.
The arrival of the FPU will boost the security of the region which has been marred by numerous attacks from al Shabaab who are still relatively active in the region. The team will so train local security officers in weapon handling and other special skills to enhance their capability.
