The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) has handed over to the Somali Federal Government (FGS) a cache of weapons captured from Al-Shabaab terrorists. The handover by AMISOM complied with United Nations procedures relating to the handling of small arms and light weapons.
Among the weapons handed over were Rocket Propelled Grenade launchers (RPGs), general-purpose machine guns and assault rifles as well as ammunitions. The resolution to hand over the weapons was put in place by the UN to ensure that the weapons are effectively stored and managed.
AMISOM is gearing for a much anticipated exit and has been erecting measures and strategies in place with increased collaboration with the FGS to ensure that all the security aspects were handed over to Somalia before the said exit.
While al Shabaab has evolved and seemingly increased its reliance on the use of IEDs and landmines the group uses light weapons to launch attacks on military bases and other security infrastructure
