AMISOM Force Commander Lt. Gen. Jonathan Rono recently visited UPDF troops in Ceeljale , in lower Shabelle region.
Lt. General’s visit was aimed at assessing the troop’s welfare, to received first-hand information on the troops operations, challenges and their successes.
Lt.Gen. Rono applauded Uganda’s UPDF troops who he said have shown gallantry in the work they are doing aimed to restore peace and stability in Somalia.
“We are proud of the leading role played by UPDF troops in AMISOM. You were the first to deploy into Somalia. You gallantly faced the myriad of challenges, before you were joined by troops from other countries. You have continued to execute the AMISOM mandate effectively, thereby ensuring that AMISOM reduces the threat posed by Al-Shaabab and other armed groups. For this, the Force Headquarters is thankful,” said Lt. Gen Rono.
Lt. Gen Rono further noted that the UPDF troops which working under the AMISOM alongside Somalia National Security Forces and public safety Institutions continues to record successes in securing the capital Mogadishu.
The Force Commander lauded the troops for their dedication saying their contribution has been a key factor in change and growth of Mogadishu and surrounding localities despite the security challenges.
On his part, UPDF Contingent Commander who also heads Sector 1, Brigadier General Sam Okiding, urged the soldiers to build on the gains already made by the outgoing troops.
The Force Commander Lt. Gen Rono led the troops in observing a one-minute silence in honor of AMISOM soldiers who have lost their lives in the line of duty in Somalia.
