Somali National Army has repulsed an attack by al Shabaab at their military outpost in Balad district in the outskirts of the country’s capital Mogadishu. The al Shabaab militants attempted to stage an overnight attack at the military outpost but the would-be attack was repulsed.
Local residents in Bal’ad district, about 30Km north of the capital said the fighters encountered resistance as they tried to storm the army base. The attack led to an hour-long gun battle between Al-Shabaab combatants and Somali government forces, which caused heavy casualties.
Al Shabaab has been feeling the pressure of attacks mounted by the SNA and allied troops as well as US airstrikes on their assets making them weak and vulnerable. Additionally, intelligence indicates that al Shabaab’s capacity to mount successful attacks has greatly reduced due to the dismantled infrastructure by counterterrorism campaigns.
