The Somali based, Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Shabaab militants clashed with Police in Dawaduba, Fino in Mandera County on Monday night.
The police killed one Al-Shabaab militants and recovered a rifle with bullets from the slain combatant. Police report that, several combatants managed to escape with bullet wounds towards Somalia. At least one National Police Reservist (NPR) was killed and another injured in the clash.
According to North Eastern Regional Commissioner, Mohamed Birik, the multi-agency operation aimed at flushing out the elements linked to Al-Shabaab from their hideout in northeastern prefectures.
Intelligence had been conveyed of a possible attack along the Kenyan border with Somalia targeting security forces camps and security patrol teams.
Fino is located about six kilometers away from the main Kenya-Somalia border. The area has in the recent past faced a number of attacks from the militants who targeted communication masts.
Birik reiterated that multi-agency operations are aimed at pacifying the area and clear it of the militants. Security operations have been intensified since two Cuban doctors were abducted from Mandera Town by Somalia based militants and heavy security presence has seen the region experience a lull of attacks since the beginning of Ramadhan.
