South African soldiers serving under the UN Force Intervention Brigade (FIB) in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) fought off Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels killing 23. The South Africa National Defense Force (SANDF) repulsed a would-be deadly ambush from the rebels on a base at Ngite, north of Mavivi in the northeastern region of DRC.
Following the altercation, Twenty-three ADF soldiers were killed in the firefight, with a large number of weapons, including AK-47s, PKMs, light machineguns, mortars, and ammunition recovered.
In recent months, the ADF has mounted several attacks in the DRC which has resulted in numerous casualties both locals and peacekeeping troops stationed in the central African nation. Reports further indicate that the recent attacks by the ADF can be linked to the fact that rebels have been linked to having pledged allegiance to ISIS central and currently under the moniker of ISIS-Central Africa.
