At least five people were killed and over ten others injured in the morning car bombing perpetrated by the Harakat Al Shabaab Al-Mujahideen (HSM) in Somalia’s capital. The car bomb explosion took place at a security checkpoint near some of the critical government buildings.
Al Shabaab, through the group’s operations spokesman, has claimed responsibility for the daring attack that is the first of its kind in the new year.
The Vehicle-borne Improvised explosive device (VBIED) went off in traffic at Sayidka area at a crucial security point that vehicles heading towards the Lower House building, Presidential palace and the Ministry of Security Headquarters.
The attack comes barely a week after a truck bomb attack killed 89 people in at the Ex-Control area on the outskirts of Mogadishu. HSM has been stepping up the sophistication of its attacks in Somalia and allied partners operating in the Horn of Africa Nation. The new and or reinvented mode of operation has seemingly increased the success and frequency of the attacks that have gradually claimed more lives in the past.
