President Mohamed Abdillahi Farmajo on Wednesday, 17th July 2019 appointed a committee in an effort to handle the escalating tension between Somalia and Somaliland.
The Somali Presidnt named the committee to spearhead negotiations between the Federal Government of Somalia – Somaliland administration to bring long-term solution besides deescalate tension between the two independent states.
The six-member committee composed of former Somali military officials, legislators and diplomats were tasked by the President Farmajo to spearhead the talks. They include;
- Abdullahi SheIkh Ismail – The Chairman, MP
- Abdirahman Abdi Hussein (Guulwade) – Deputy Chair
- Abdirahman Maalim Abdullahi (Baadiyow) – Member
- Ali Said Fiqi – Member- Diplomat
- Major Gen. Ahmed Jamaa Muuse – Member
- Ali Ahmed Jamaa (Jangeli) – Member, MP
According to a press statement from Villa Somalia, the new committee was tasked to undertake the following issues;
- To lead and represent the behalf of the Federal Government of Somalia in the talks.
- To prepare comprehensive research on the legal aspects as well as the political, historical, social-economic and social affairs on the outcome of the talks.
- To advise and give updates to the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia on the progress of the talks.
- To prepare the road-map of the talks.
- The committee to finalize its structure while having the ability to hire experts and advisors where necessary.
Farmajo’s naming of the reconciliation committee comes at a time Somaliland has been making diplomatic inroads with a number of African countries including Kenya and Guinea.
