Intelligence reports from Somali security forces show that six al Shabaab militants have surrendered in the southern regions of the country following the continued assault against them. The militant surrendered themselves as well as a large cache of weapons to the SNA in Dinsor District in the Bay region.
Al-Shabaab militants and their top officials are on the run from their hideouts after Somali National Army (SNA) backed by African Union peacekeeping forces and international partners have intensified the military operations against the group.
The reports further indicate that the militants traveled form Arabow, a rumored hideout for the militants in the region and they are cooperating with the forces to give information on al Shabaab.
The defections have increased as Somali native al Shabaab fighters, as well as the foreign militants, fear the persecutions caused by the rift within the ranks of the al Shabaab. Moreover, increased ground assault from SNA-AMISOM backed by the air campaign by the US drones has increased fear which has increased the upsurge of al Shabaab surrenders and defections.
