March 1, 2016: The Somali National Army backed by allied AMISOM troops have retaken control of Lanta-Buuro in Lower Shabelle region barely a day after the al Shabaab militants seized the area.
The al Shabaab militants streamed into the area on Monday 29th February took control of the minor SNA base in an area which had previously been rescued from the militants. The al Shabaab took advantage of the fact that the SNA base wasn’t heavily guarded seeing as the area has been secure from the al Shabaab.
Early March 1st, SNA backed by AMISOM advanced the area and retrieved the camp and the town with no resistance from the al Shabaab militants who fled when the troops advanced.
Lanta-Buuro is a key location near Afgoye town, some 30Km north-west of Mogadishu which was liberated from the militants in 2011.
Al Shabaab despite attacking troops and high ranking officials’ convoys they are still very weak and vulnerable as evidenced by their immediate retreat upon the advancement of the backed-up troops. It is very evident that the al Shabaab are merely trying to remain relevant and are terrified of the AMISOM troops as they do not match up in morale and weaponry.
