March 1, 2016: The federal Government of Nigeria has echoed its commitment to repatriating over 60,000 Nigerian refugees hosted in Minawao camp, Maruoa Cameroon. The refugees hosted at the camp have all been displaced by the ISIS-affiliated Boko Haram insurgency that has terrorized the northeastern part of Nigeria.
The repatriation will involve a tripartite agreement between Nigeria, Cameroon and the UN high Commission for Refugees.
The announcement was made when Nigeria’s Minister of Interior Abdulrahman Dambazau visited the refugees in the camp on his 3-day visit to Cameroon. During his visit, the minister donated food and clothing from the federal government.
The two countries additionally agreed to exchange information that will help defeat the Boko Haram that have launched a series of attacks in Cameroon due to the geographical proximity to Nigeria and involvement in the anti-Boko Haram campaign.
