Nine suspected extremists including a commander have been killed in shootouts with police in suburbs of the Egyptian capital, Cairo. Those killed included “a commander of the Liwa Al-Thawra” extremist group.
The members of the terrorist cell were monitored when they were moving in a car, ready to carry out terrorist attacks. When the militants acknowledged they had been surrounded, they opened intense fire on the military.
The Liwa Al-Thawra movement appeared in 2016 and has since claimed deadly attacks against the police and the Egyptian army.
The terrorist cell is said to have been planning an attack against the military in the north of the Sinai Peninsula.
