Reports from Somalia indicate that 20 Al-Shabaab fighters have so far been killed in a fresh clash with Somali government forces in Bay region, southwestern Somalia.
According to a military commander with SNA 60th Division and stationed in Daynunay base, Ismael Khalif Shire, the 20 militants were killed after botched attack on the military camp near Bay regional capital of Baidoa on Monday.
Al-Shabaab through their propaganda media outlets and in an effort to remain relevant, issued a statement claiming they had overrun an army camp belonging to SNA.
Similarly, pro-ISIS branch in Somalia had made claims of attack on AMISOM convoy in what they termed as their ‘first attack’ in Somalia. AMISOM, however, refuted such claims saying none of their convoy or personnel was hit by any elements.
Al Shabaab previously has carried out suicide attacks and targeted assassinations on SNA, AMISOM and Federal Government personnel in central and southern Somalia.
Over 22,000-strong African Union peacekeepers from Kenya, Uganda, Djibouti, Ethiopia and Burundi have been supporting Somali National Army in the fight against Al Qaeda-linked militants.
