Two Puntland Army officers belonging to the bomb disposal unit have been bee killed by an IED attack on their vehicle outside Basaso town. The two were on their way back to the military base after their car was hit the IED.
Al-Shabaab has since claimed responsibility for the attack in an increased wave of attacks targeting security officers across Somalia.
The Islamic States cells in the Bali prefecture of the Puntland region have significantly increased attacks in the area. The attacks though small scale are meant to show the terror group is active and attract funding from the parent group in Syria and Iraq.
The terror group’s faction affiliated to ISIS is led by former Al-Shabaab leader Sheikh Abdikadir Muumin and is predominantly present in Puntland
