The Islamic State Central Africa Province (ISCAP) militants in DRC killed at least 17 people in the village Idohu in the chiefdom of Walese Vonkutu in the south of Irumu territory in Ituri. The group has been conducting attacks in Ituri and has been stepping up attacks against citizens despite the ongoing state of emergency.
The provisional assessment is 17 people including 12 men, 3 women, and 2 children were killed in the attack. According to intelligence, the militants fired several shots to immobilize the population before tying them and beheading at least twelve of the victims.
There has been a public outcry in Irumu with residents maintaining that while there is a state of siege, they are still being targeted by ISCAP with little military intervention which has since made the territory the theatre for senseless killing. SI intelligence further indicates a migration of a huge group of terrorists from Beni and into Ituri where they have established dominance by attacking local rebel groups such as Mayimayi.
The DRC military and UN peacekeepers must step up operations in Ituri as they have been in Beni and ensure that the militants and their plans are thwarted as they appear to move further into the already restive region.
