At least 115 al Shabaab fighters killed and 110 others arrested by the Galmudug forces in the past 4 days fighting in Mudug region. This was announced by the Galmudug president Abdikarim Hussein Guled in a status update press conference.
The Galmudug forces dislodged al Shabaab fighters that last week sought to cross over into Mudug region after escaping the Puntland forces in Nugal region where they attempted to launch a sea-borne assisted takeover of the regions.
Summary:
Following 4 days of intense fighting between the Galmudug forces and the al Shabaab militants, cumulatively at least 115 militias were killed and 110 other captured in a botched takeover of villages in the Mudug region.
Galmudug President Abdikarim Hussein Guled said lauded the swift response by his security forces that engaged and overpowered the militants who sought to regroup in the area and launch attacks.
In the 4-day operation, the forces seized a boat that was ferrying militants through the Indian Ocean to provide back up for the already cornered militants.
Al Shabaab have suffered major setbacks with increased attacks in southern and central Somalia especially by aerial bombardments from the Kenya Defence Forces driving them out of their major strongholds into remote villages with no food, medical supplies, money, water and weapons.
Experts have observed a pattern that indicate the militants are moving towards the northern part of Somalia as they flee the attacks in the south and central Somalia. Al-Shabaab terror group has lost approximately 1500 fighters in Somalia since mid-January 2016 (after attacking KDF AMISOM contingent in El-Adde area in Gedo Somalia).
