February 24, 2016: Somali National Army and allied AMISOM forces repulsed a would-be deadly recapture attack by the al Shabaab militants in the outskirts of Leego village in Lower Shabelle area.
The fighting ensued after the AMISOM troops embarked on a mop-up operation to rid of the militants in the area who had attacks AU troops using a roadside landmine on Monday 22nd February.
An undisclosed number of al Shabaab militants were killed in the operation, 10 AK-47 assault rifles were recovered and a sizeable amount of ammunition in the clash.
A local village administrator Abukar Isack popularly known as Al Adala said that the al Shabaab militants lost immensely to the heavily armed allied troops causing the seemingly re-energized militants to retreat and hide back in the bush.
Despite propagandist media for the al Shabaab are portraying the militants as re-energized and empowered, reports on the ground show a group trying desperately to remain relevant. They are grasping at the little power they have especially in the areas they deem as their strongholds before they are driven out by the AMISOM airstrikes and ground troops.
