The Islamic State affiliates in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula commonly now known as the Sinai Province of the IS have conducted two ambushes at security forces at checkpoints. 10 soldiers were killed and at least 11 soldiers and civilians wounded in the attack.
Gunmen opened fire with automatic rifles at the soldiers at Sheikh Zuweid and Rafah security checkpoints. The attacked security forces were protecting the Palestinian Gaza Strip crossing point.
There have been increased attacks on the Egyptian security forces especially since 2013 when the military overthrew the Islamist President Mohamed Morsi claimed by the Sinai-based insurgency.
The attack is preceded by the announcement of the joint Arab Military force to fight the Islamic State and the ban lift on military equipment importation from the United States.
