5th January 2016, Latest reports from Pentagon have confirmed that a number of US Special Forces have been killed and others wounded during a special operation mission in southern Afghanistan.
The US Defence Department has not mentioned the exact number of casualties but only confirmed of the attack near the city of Marjah, Helmand province.
This locality has been a stronghold of Taliban militants for some years.
“We are deeply saddened by this loss,” US military spokesman Brig. Gen. Wilson Shoffner was quoted in a statement Tuesday.
An American “medevac” team called in to recover casualties also came under fierce mortar and small-arms fire according to military spokesman.
There was no immediate report on who had attacked the helicopter or whether any casualties were suffered on the rescue medevac team but Taliban spokesman through their propaganda online channels rushed to claim that the militant group had shot down an American transport helicopter in Helmand.
