The United States has resolved to resume her security funding to Somalia to aid in combating al Shabaab in the country. The aid was discontinued in 2017 following persistent corruption concerns withing Somali National Armed Forces (SNAF).
Washington maintained that “The US resumed providing direct security assistance to a non-mentored unit of the SNAF this week in support of counterterrorism operations in Lower Shabelle against al-Shabab”.
The security assistance has been resumed mainly owing to the strides the Somali government has made in public financial management and institutional reforms that have installed accountability mechanisms that allow for checks and balances in the system.
The funding will inject the needed financial boost to the SNAF that has been struggling to deal with the al Shabaab menace as well as building its capability to take over the overall security apparatus upon the exit of African Union peacekeepers.
