Military Intelligence assets in Somalia confirm that an airstrike conducted by U.S. military in the vicinity of Sakow town, Middle Shabelle region killed a senior extremist of the Al-Qaeda aligned, Al-Shabaab militant group.
The precision airstrike was conducted on Monday by an unmanned U.S. drone. The drone targeted a vehicle outside Sakow, a town in Somalia’s Middle Juba region, killing the extremist leader and wounding another.
The drone strike was conducted in coordination with allied intelligence assets which assisted in tracking the killed militant before the U.S. airstrike.
The U.S. Africa Command confirmed the strike.
We continue to work closely with allied partners to take decisive action to eliminate terrorists who wish to do harm to the Somali people, said U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Miguel A. Castellanos, the deputy director of operations.
U.S. Africa Command, in a statement noted that no civilians were injured or killed as a result of the airstrike.
