On Tuesday 26th July 2016, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolved through voting to extend peacekeeping mission in Central African Republic (CAR) till November 2017.
The move to have the mission’s mandate extended was prompted by the election of the new president Faustin-Archange Touadera and the French military operation codenamed Sangaris which is near-end.
France proposed the mission in CAR to be extended; MINUSCA (UN Mission in the Central African Republic) extended it until November 15, 2017.

The mission has a staff level of almost 13,000 soldiers and police.
Security situation in CAR currently has improved but remains fragile because of the presence of armed groups.
Citing security improvement, the number of peacekeepers might be reduced in the coming days.
French Sangaris forces have already reduced their soldiers from 2,500 to 350 men.
MINUSCA is in the front line to ensure safety until the CAR army is able to effectively protect the state.
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) called on countries contributing peacekeepers to better train and equip them and give them intelligence capabilities to anticipate /thwart attacks.
