On Tuesday 26th July 2016 South Sudan sworn in the former negotiator for the country’s armed opposition as First Vice President.
The retired Gen. Taban Deng Gai was sworn as the first vice president replacing Riek Machar whose whereabouts remain unknown.
Machar fled to undisclosed location after fresh violence erupted between forces loyal to president Kiir and his loyalists.
Kiir gave Machar 48-hour ultimatum to return to Juba but failed to honor his orders and subsequently was sucked.
Gai who was appointed by President Salva Kiir in a decree on Monday and officially sworn Tuesday vowed to work with Kiir to end violence and economic crisis facing South Sudan.
Gai called on the displaced civilians to return home and help build the country.
Tho achieve peace, Gai recognized and accepted President Salva Kiir as the Commander in Chief calling for one army.
“This country has a constitution, this country have a president and have a law to be followed. Your Excellence Mr. President, as I said, you are my commander in chief. The country cannot have two armies,” he said.
