On Monday 15th June 2015, London and Washington envoys to Nairobi commended the Kenya Defense Forces for thwarting an attack by Al-Shabaab militants in Lamu on Sunday. In the terror counter attack, Kenya Defense Forces killed 11 members of the Islamist group.
The Kenya military reported that 100 members of the Somali based terror group Harakat Al Shabaab Al Mujahideen attacked a military outpost in Lamu hoping to carry out substantial damage but failed miserably owing to counter-intelligence by the Kenyan security services.
Dr Christian Turner, the UK High Commissioner in Nairobi said that Kenya’s security challenges represent a shared threat, and require a shared response, adding that the UK continues to work closely with the Kenyan government both in the fight against terrorism, and in its efforts to bring the guilty to justice.
US Ambassador Robert Godec said in a statement lauded the Kenya Defense Forces and other security services that risk their lives daily to counter the scourge of terrorism in Kenya and the region. He added that the United States remains a committed friend and will continue to stand with Kenya in the fight against terrorism.
The terrorist group failed in their mission to instill fear among the villagers just before the event of Mpeketoni Memorial. The militants burnt Mangai Secondary School dormitory and torched Mangai Health Center but no civilian was killed.
