Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni is set to host a summit convening Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs) of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) in Kampala. The summit will draw participation from leaders of AMISOM contributing countries as well as the Federal Republic of Somalia. It will be held on between February 27 and March 2.
The summit is a follow up to a September 2017 meeting hosted by Museveni in New York at the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
The primary agenda of the summit is to offer all parties involved a platform to discuss the current situation in Somalia as well as forge a sustainable mechanism and predictable funding source to facilitate the AMISOM transition plan. It will also include a meeting between the Chief of Defense Forces from contributing countries to discuss offensive strategies against the al Shabaab militants.
Also, in attendance will be representatives from the AU, UN Secretariat, EU, Regional and Sub-Regional organizations, and representatives of the Five Permanent Members of the UN Security Council.
Uganda has been a very active partner in Somalia seeing as it was the first country to deploy its troops to the war-torn and country and its contingent under AMISOM remains the largest based in Sector I.
