Head of the United States’ Military Africa Command, General David M. Rodriguez on Wednesday 30th September awarded six Ugandan military officials with US Legion of Merit on his visit to Uganda.
The six awarded include Uganda’s Chief commander General Katumba Wamala for their exceptional and work especially in the command of the troops in Somalia. All the recipients of the Legion of Merit have all served as commanders of Ugandan troops in Somalia under the AMISOM fold.
Rodriguez visit to Uganda along with awards bestowed on the Ugandan top commander is as an acknowledgement of the efforts by the Uganda troops in fighting Islamists in Somalia. He further applauded their efforts referencing the better lives being led by Somali people as a result of the deliberate risk taking and selfless efforts of the troops in Somalia.
Uganda in the past has established herself as a top military player in the region sending her troops to countries both in the East African region and the volatile Great Lakes region to uphold peace and end conflict. Ugandan troops were the first troops to launch their missions in Somalia and are to date the largest troop contributor to AMISOM.
Uganda troops have also reestablished the importance of justice by contracting the US forces military advice in the search for the fugitive Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony wanted for war crimes at the International Criminal Court.
