Military operations in Tikrit were on Wednesday led by a coalition between the US army, Shiite militias and Iraqi led forces.
The operation which was the first U.S led airstrike operation against the Islamic State targeted major hideouts of the militia groups in Tikrit.
American warplanes and aircraft from allied nations struck up their targets in the northern Iraqi city destroying ISIL strongholds.
Despite previous successful operations by the Iraqi forces in Tikrit, the U.S. arm shall continue providing training and aerial support to the Iraqi government as confirmed by Iraqi Prime Minister, Haider al-Abadi.
The offensive which began in March has however registered a number of civilian casualties and some have even fled from their homes.
