BURUNDI CRISIS, May 3, 2016
Violence continues to be witnessed in Burundi following delayed talks.
U.S. is in support for urgent resumption of Burundian dialogue led by former Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa and under the auspices of the East African Community.
Delayed dialogue has fuelled crisis resulting in hundreds being killed, thousands injured and more than 260,000 Burundian being internally displaced.
The violence escalation has seen the country’s economy worsen significantly.
U.S. is now urging all stakeholders to resume to the dialogue table as soon as possible and to commit to participating without setting conditions to the parties.
Burundi political leaders owe it to the citizens to take a bold step and resolve the current crisis as a matter of urgency within the framework of the Arusha Accord in order to realize peace and stability in Burundi.
The leaders from the warring sides asked to cease all manner of violence and standoff, engage in an inclusive and peaceful dialogue to avoid a repeat of what happened in the previous mediation effort led by Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni which failed to make progress.
