U.S now wants to expand the military’s ability to battle the Al-Qaeda affiliated Harakat Shabab Mujahideen better known as Al-Shabaab.
Recommendations given to the White House would allow U.S special operations increased to Somali National Army (SNA).
According to senior U.S. officials, U.S also has suffered by the hand the Al-Qaeda extremist group that has plotted attacks against America.
Once the proposal goes through, U.S military will be granted a greater flexibility to launch airstrikes against the Shabab extremists in Somalia.
Beefing up military in Somalia would boost the already AMISOM efforts. Somalia was among the seven predominantly Muslim countries included in Trump’s travel ban last month. The executive order has since been suspended by federal courts.
According to Gen. Thomas Waldhauser, United States is trying to take look at Somalia from a fresh perspective. He noted for the need to boost military intervention in order to weaken and defeat the decade-old Al-Shabaab insurgency.
The new president, Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, has called on Al-Shabaab to surrender to the authorities, promising to fix his country.
