The United States (U.S.) carried out its first airstrike targeting the Islamic State held city of Sirte in Libya.
Sirte city located about 450 kilometers east of the Libya’s capital Tripoli.
According to a statement broadcast on state-run TV and conformed by Prime Minister of Libya’s United Nations (UN) backed unity government, Fayez Seraj, the first U.S. airstrikes were carried out at specific locations in Sirte on Monday evening causing severe losses to the enemy (ISIS).
Pentagon also confirmed on the air assaults against ISIS in Sirte stressing they were carried out on requests from the UN-backed Libyan government.
They were subsequently authorized by U.S. President Obama following a recommendation by defense chiefs.
