
Monday 7th December 2015, latest military report from Somalia indicate that a top Al Shabaab figure has turned himself in to the security forces in Barawe locality in Somalia.
Intelligence reports reveal that Al Shabaab which if faced by infighting withing its faction is at cross-hairs with a small faction that pledged baya’h to the Islamic State self-proclaimed caliph emir, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
Barawe has been one of Al Shabaab’s strategic towns until was captured under Operation Indian Ocean.
A joint operation launched by AMISOM’s UPDF peacekeepers and Somali forces flushed the militants out of the key coastal town.
Barawe falls in AMISOM sector one that is manned by UPDF troops.
Al Shabaab in the past few weeks has been persecuting pro-ISIS jihadists within it faction to mitigate possibility of parent Al Shabaab group from further disintegrating.
The top figure was an ISIS supporter according to intelligence gathered and opted to surrender to the authorities in the wake of Al Shabaab leadership calling for hunting down and persecution of ‘traitors’ who have switched loyalty to ISIS.
