The 36th Ordinary Session of the AU summit held in Addis Ababa had security and various conflicts across the globe including Mozambique and DRC. The summit highlighted the need for member states to employ goodwill in dealing with their neighbors and brewing conflicts. The summit also reiterated its unwavering stand on undemocratic power changes by maintaining its suspension of four countries; Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, and Sudan, which have been ruled by military leaders following coups.
The African Union adopted recommendations from its subcommittee, the Peace and Security Council (PSC)chaired by South African president Cyril Ramaphosa concerning the deteriorating security situation in the Eastern region of the Democratic of Congo (DRC). The PSC made recommendations that are expected to enhance dialogue and end the tensions between Rwanda and DRC.
The recommendation was that the parties involved, that is DRC and Rwanda through their leaders, must pursue dialogue and consultations. The same was called upon by the neighboring countries and the Angolan president was praised for being proactive in the matter as evidenced by the Luanda agreement that was mediated by the Angolan President, Joao Lourenco. Furthermore, countries in the Great Lakes Region accepted that the principle of putting dialogue was a major instrument to secure and guarantee peace.
On the conflict in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado Province, the summit upheld its support for the SADC bloc to deal with Islamic State Insurgency. It maintained that the deployment of the SAMIM troops was the best cause of action and that the AU would do its best to support Mozambique and SADC.
