Al-Shabaab militants on Tuesday afternoon attempted to carry out an attack at a police station in Afgoye town in Lower Shabelle region of southern Somalia.
According to a report by Somali National News Agency (SONNA) and referencing Spokesman of the African Union Peacekeeping Troops, Joe Kibet, the militants first carried out a suicide car bomb (SVBIED) but before the militants on the ground could get access to the police station, Somali police immediately engaged them in a fire fight for a while before reinforcement from AMISOM got on the scene repulsing the militants.
The AlQaeda affiliated Al-Shabaab fled northward from the town and to the village of Marerey where they reportedly set civilian houses on fire.
Al-Shabaab terrorists through their propaganda channel claimed to have killed several Somali police.
It is too early to establish the BDA from both sides but the enemy suffered huge blows, the spokesman added.
