Authorities in Kenya on Tuesday arrested a suspect at President’s Uhuru Kenyatta’s rural home in Gatundu, Kiambu County. The suspect, Mirre Siyad is suspected to be from the Al-Shabaab terror group which is aligned with the Al-Qaeda.
Siyad was suspected to have been conducting surveillance on the first family’s rural home in preparation for a terrorist attack.
Siyad was arraigned in court on Wednesday where he did not plea to the charges against him he was remanded for 15 days pending investigations by the counter-terrorism police unit.
It is believed that Siyad was not a lone wolf but rather was working with associates who are still being tracked down by the counter-terrorism unit of the Kenyan police.
Investigators hope to derive very important data on the suspect’s cell phone that they hope will be crucial in identifying the associates and details of the purported attack that he was conducting surveillance for.
Security in Kenya has been beefed up since the Garissa University College massacre that claimed 148 lives most being students. Major and drastic measures have been taken to ensure the populace’s safety.
Suspected Al-Shabaab militants have been rounded up and are being investigated for involvement with either the militia or the April, 2nd massacre.
