After seven years of the Syrian Army fighting Islamic State Militants in Damascus, the military has finally driven all the militants out of Damascus and declared the Syrian Capital and its surroundings “safe” from militants.
Pro-Syrian government forces battled for weeks to take over and liberate al-Hajar al-Aswad district. The recovery of al-Hajar al-Aswad means the area south of Damascus has been completely cleared off insurgents.
A temporary humanitarian ceasefire has been in place since Sunday night in al-Hajar al-Aswas to allowed women, children and old people to leave.
Syrian flags where raised and shots were fired in the air in celebration.
By Sunday, fighter had begun withdrawing from the area towards Islamic State territory in eastern Syrian under a surrender deal.
