South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir has ordered army chiefs to mobilize resources to enforce a three-month state of emergency in three states; Gok, Western and Eastern Lakes. The state of emergency will involve the disarmament of civilians in the states with an order to use necessary force in case of any resistance in the areas that have been experiencing intercommunal fighting that has killed at least 150 people.
The clashes are reported to have often led to the burning of houses and other property. At the heart of the recent deadly clashes is a land dispute. Security forces, however, say security has improved after a recent deployment that has led to 170 plus people dead, three hundred forty-two houses have been burnt and almost 1,800 people displaced.
