South Africa has deployed its second combat group, Bravo, to serve under Operation Vikela in Mozambique, taking over from the first group, Alpha, which had completed its two-month deployment.
The soldiers are drawn from Zeerust, North West-based, 2 SAI, and will work alongside police, military, correctional services personnel, and civilians in the SAMIM mission in Cabo Delgado to bring peace and stability to Mozambique’s northern province, particularly in the areas of Macomia, Mueda, and Nangade.
Welcoming the Bravo troops, South African two-star general Xolani Mankayi praised the previous group for its outstanding work in ensuring peace, stability, and security for Mozambicans in Cabo Delgado. He urged the new arrivals to give the mission their all and warned them against abusing authority by disregarding international human rights.
The deployment of the South African combat group is part of a wider effort to address the security situation in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province. The region has been plagued by an insurgency since 2017, which has resulted in the displacement of thousands of people and left many dead or injured.
