Event Summary:
The Federal Republic of Somalia through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Investment Promotion on Thursday 7th January severed ties with Iran and issued a 72-hour ultimatum for its staffers to leave Mogadishu.
Conclusion:
In the statement, the expulsion of the Iranian ambassador to Somalia was as a result of the attack of the Saudi embassy in Tehran, Iran which led to a diplomatic fall out between the two countries.
Somalia has accused Iran severally of spreading Shiite indoctrination in Mogadishu despite Iran vehemently denying the accusation. In line with this, Somali based their reason for severing ties as continuous interference by Iran in internal affairs.
Somalia joins other Sunni Muslim state like Saudi Arabia, Djibouti, Sudan, UAE and Bahrain in cutting ties with Iran in the wake of the crisis with numerous others reducing their relation with Iran to a minimum.
