Somalia President Abdullahi Mohamed Farmajo thanked Ugandan troops serving in Somalia under the Mandate of African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
Farmajo thanked Ugandan government for supporting his country fight against the Islamists Al-Shabaab through UPDF troops for the last 10 years.
Somalia president highlighted key successes of the AMISO troops saying his country owes the African Union peacekeeping troops for their selfless contribution towards eliminating the Al-Qaeda linked Al-0Shabaab and subsequently stabilizing Somalia.
The president also noted of strides made in stabilizing Somalia, the country’s forces have a long way to go and thus called on continued support from AMISOM to completely defeat Al-Shabaab.
On his part, Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni urged the UN Security Council to support the mission in order to avoid previous mistakes where there was delay in paying of the troops. He also called on gradual reduction of AMISOM troops by 2020.
Uganda has the highest number of troops serving in Somalia under AMISOM standing over 6,000 soldiers.
