Al-Shabaab assassins shot and killed a prominent Somali elder in the capital Mogadishu, the latest in a series of targeted assassinations against elders involved in the recent elections.
The elder who was identified as Madahay was shot dead at a khat market in Mogadishu’s Hodon district, by two gun-toting Al-Shabaab assassins who fled the scene before the arrival of police authority.
Late Madahay was among the Electoral College who elected members of the current Somalia s Federal Parliament from the regional administration of Jubbaland state in December 2016.
The militant group Al-Shabaab has threatened electoral delegate who participated in the electoral process that they will be targeted by their fighters.
This comes after Somalia’s council of ministers announced plan to form joint task forces to stabilize the capital in the coming months. The joint forces will be drawn from the Police forces, army and intelligence agency.
