The Somali based Harakat Al Shabaab Al Mujahideen early September 2015 released a statement broadcast claiming to have Uganda soldiers under their custody whom they allege to have captured when they overran a military camp under the guard of Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) in southern Somalia on Tuesday September 1, 2015.
Summary
On 1 September 2015, Al-Shabaab fighters rammed an explosive laden car against an African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) military base in Janale, 90km southeast of Mogadishu. The militants then engaged troops for hours in the heavy exchange that left 12 Uganda soldiers dead.
The militants then released a propaganda video, claiming responsibility for the attack, which was followed by a statement broadcast claiming to have Uganda soldiers under their custody.
Uganda has so far claimed that all their soldiers missing have been accounted for. 12 soldiers who died in the heavy exchange were taken back to Uganda.
The Al Shabaab terror group uses propaganda videos and statement broadcasts to remain relevant in the region. But then, the militants are currently suffering major losses from AMISOM launched offensives that are flushing them out of their strongholds and disorganizing their operations into minor pockets.
