The Somali National Army has announced major success against al Shabaab brought about by the recapture of three strategic villages in Gedo region. The three villages were recaptured following operations geared at clearing and driving out al Shabaab militants in the region.
The recaptured villages are Ali Harard, Gubadheer, and Juungal in operations that will continue even as the Muslim gear to end the Holy month of Ramadhan. Operations against al Shabaab in the south and central Somalia have been intensified during the Holy Month as the militants tend to attack and capture villages during the month.
While Gedo is considered as among the most volatile regions in Somalia owing to the numerous attacks and heavy al Shabaab presence, the operations by SNA and allied troops are gradually degrading the position held by the al-Qaeda affiliated terror organization.
