The Somali National Army (SNA) foiled an attack that targeted the convoy of military court, chief Col. Hassan Ali Nor Shute in the restive Gedo region of Somalia on September 15.
Somali military sources confirmed of the would have been attack and noted it would have been a devastating attacks citing the attackers had targeted the military judge and his delegation after completing a court session in Gedo region by planting a number of explosives on a major road.
The sources further confirmed that the military successfully removed roadside explosives and subsequently defusing them. The attack most likely would have been a retaliation against the military court, which is mandated to prosecute high profile criminal cases among them trying Al-Shabaab suspects.
With almost collapsed and a dysfunctional judiciary, Somalia has for a long time banked on the military court to try hardcore criminals and Al-Shabaab militants. The military court received backing and credence from a Somali citizenry who believe that it acts in accordance with the law.
In the latest convictions, the military court chief convicted Farhan Mohamud Hassan, who has been serving in the SNA. He confessed to have worked and facilitated Al-Shabaab in its operations. His prosecution is one among many that exposes infiltration in government institutions by the Al-Shabaab militants especially the security agencies of war-torn country.
