Somali troops in the northern state of Puntland have taken control of the town of Af-urur days after armed group al-Shabaab captured it. Special forces launched operations to retake the town and succeeded despite being met by resistance from the militants.
The terrorists retreated and vacated the town after increased SNA presence and have since positioned themselves. Forces have continued to conduct operations to clear explosives and other booby traps intended to cause harm.
Puntland has been the ground for numerous terror attacks with both Islamic State and Al-Qaeda militants heavily active and with the former’s main headquarters being in the mountainous Bari region.
