Residents of Kunyabarrow village in Lower Shabelle region engaged in a fierce gun battle with Al Shabaab militants on Thursday 1st October.
The armed residents defied the militants’ orders taking up arms in the village near Barawe city. The residents who have adopted a community policing program to ensure security in the rural areas engaged the al Shabaab militants following indefinite discrepancies among them.
Barawe District Commissioner, Hussein Bare said that several people died and scores injured with no immediate confirmation of the numbers.
Residents in Somalia have recently adopted a security policy used in her neighbor Kenya that ensures security at the grassroots by implementing community policing. The resident of Kunyabarow village resistance indicates that the militants are worn out and are targeting very soft targets to try and re-establish their relevance and hold on the locals.
