A senior member of al Shabaab was killed by a United States’ drone strike Kunya Barow area south of the Somali capital, Mogadishu. The yet to be identified key figure is believed to be part of al Shabaab’s arms that is in charge of communications between the group in Somalia and al Qaeda.
The drone strike in the vicinity Kunya Barow area was in support of joint operation with Somalia in the al Shabaab stronghold that serves as hideouts for the terrorist organization.
The US has been targeting senior al Shabaab leaders that act as liaison with al Qaeda as part of a campaign to breakdown the group from the top. It is important to note that the elimination of the top figures has in the past created wrangles within the group causing defections and splinter groups that result in infighting.
US airstrikes against al Shabaab this year have killed key al Shabaab leaders and members and are in line with the Trump administration to eradicate terrorist groups in their various enclaves across the globe.
