March 17, 2016: A spokesman for the Saudi-led military coalition in Yemen has said that major combat operations are expected to cease as the coalition seeks to explore long term plans geared at stability in Yemen.
Brig. Gen. Ahmed al-Asiri said that the Saudi-led coalition would continue to give air support to the Yemeni forces that are battling Shiite Houthi rebels and Islamic militants on the ground.
The year-long air campaign and ground combat operations were launched by Saudi Arabia with the aim of pushing out the Houthi rebels out of the capital Sanaa that they seized in 2014. The announcement has been lauded as it will pave way for more diplomatic and allow for a more permanent peaceful political solution that will end the violence and bloodshed in Yemen.
