Rewards for Justice is offering a bounty reward of up to $5 million for information on Mahad Karate, also known as Abdirahman Mohamed Warsame. Mahad Karate serves as Al-Shabaab’s shadow deputy leader. Karate has significant command responsibility over the Amniyaat, Al-Shabaab’s intelligence and security wing, as well as the terrorist group’s finances.
Al-Shabaab’s Amniyaat wing plays a very key role in the execution of suicide attacks and assassinations in Somalia, Kenya besides other countries in East Africa region. The intelligence wing also provides logistical support for Al-Shabaab’s terrorist activities. For example, Amniyaat was responsible for the April 2015 attack on Garissa University College in Kenya that killed nearly 150 people, mostly students.
On April 10, 2015, the U.S. Department of State designated Karate as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist pursuant to Executive Order 13224, as amended. Following this designation, all property, and interests in property linked to Karate that are subject to U.S. jurisdiction were effective immediately blocked. Also, U.S. persons subsequently prohibited from engaging in any transactions with the key Shabaab operative and leader.
Additionally, it is a crime to knowingly provide, or attempt or conspire to provide, material support or resources to the Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Shabaab, a U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization.
