EVENT SUMMARY
MUDUG, Somalia: 22 Al-Shabaab militants were killed after resident in central region of Mudug took arms against them over Zakah collection (an Islamic levy on wealth) on Monday 22nd February 2016.
According to minister of information for the interim Galmdug administration Mohamud Osman Mudug residents defied Al-Shabaab order to round up their livestock.
Osman said Mudug resident clashed with Al-Shabaab in Aad and El-abdi localities. Heavy fighting erupted between the militants and the armed residents killing at least 22 militants.
The minister confirmed at least 22 Al-Shabaab fighters died in the clashes while 33 others fled wounded.
“The militants tried to do Zakah collections forcefully from local herders who refused Al-Shabaab demands and prompting the fight that left 22 militants dead,” Galmudug information minister was quoted saying.
Galmudug state minister of information said one civilian was killed in the battle.
